As remote sensing transforms forest and urban tree management, automating tree species classification is now a major challenge to harness these advances for forestry and urban management. This study investigated the use of structural bark features from terrestrial laser scanner point cloud data for tree species identification. It presents a novel mathematical approach for describing bark characteristics, which have traditionally been used by experts for the visual identification of tree species. These features were used to train four machine learning algorithms (decision trees, random forests, XGBoost, and support vector machines). These methods achieved high classification accuracies between 83% (decision tree) and 96% (XGBoost) with a data set of 85 trees of four species collected near Krakow, Poland. The results suggest that bark features from point cloud data could significantly aid species identification, potentially reducing the amount of training data required by leveraging centuries of botanical knowledge. This computationally efficient approach might allow for real-time species classification.

Experimental Test of Non-Destructive Methods to Assess the Anchorage of Trees

Our results can provide a wider scientific basis for the pulling test method.
More than 280 trees were uprooted in winching tests monitored by high resolution inclinometers at the base of the trees and a forcemeter mounted in the winching line. The dataset comprises trees growing on different urban and forest sites in Europe and North America and mainly consists of fifteen widespread tree species. For the first time, a large number of trees were measured non-destructively prior to uprooting failure, as commonly practiced by consulting arborists in static load tests. With these tests, the bending moment required to cause 0.25° root plate inclination (rotational stiffness) was determined and used to predict the strength of the root system from equations described in two evaluation methods currently used in arboriculture. The predictions were tested against the measured anchorage strength, i.e., the maximum bending moment that was required to uproot the trees. Both methods delivered good estimates, which indicates that rotational stiffness at 0.25° inclination of the stem base is a suitable proxy for anchorage strength. Both equations can be considered valid for assessing the likelihood of uprooting failure, as they systematically underestimate and rarely overestimate the actual resistance to failure of a tree’s root system. As a trend, the differences between predicted and measured anchorage strength were larger for small trees, for which the resistance of the root system was overcome at larger inclination angles. While the quality of the predictions differed for species, it did not differ between sites. The angles of stem inclination at which the anchorage strength was overcome for all trees in our dataset support models for the mechanics involved in uprooting failure that previously have been described only for conifers with a shallow root system.

Accuracy and reproducibility of acoustic tomography significantly increase with precision of sensor position

To produce accurate and repeatable tomograms of trees with complex shapes, it is essential to measure the sensor positions precisely.
Although the industry has raised the standards of tree risk assessment considerably in recent years, the quality of judgements is still very variable and influenced by a wide range of factors. Due to the complexity and diversity of trees and sites, collecting and verifying relevant personal experiences takes tree assessors many years. In many countries, new tree assessors learn from a small number of experienced peers.

Artificial intelligence (AI) can be used to collect and condense scattered knowledge and deploy it in a support tool for basic tree assessment. In this project, the application of a commercial AI decision-making system software to tree assessment is tested. The software is based
on a new dynamic nonclassical logic, which combines diverse knowledge sources to an emergent system to support visual tree assessments. A set of rules describes existing knowledge about the mostly unsharp parameters affecting the likelihood of failure and damage. The software evaluates the data collected during a basic tree assessment and provides an estimate of the level of risk posed by the tree. The result and the reasons for it are presented in plain language. Users can then examine this estimate and feed their own assessment back into the system to train it further, so that this “white” AI system is self-learning based on experience acquired in practical use.

The use of AI in tree risk assessment not only supports the user but can also be used to disseminate knowledge and promote the standardization of decision-making in tree assessment.

Important directions for further research and knowledge gaps related to the training of AI systems in the absence of industry-wide, agreed-upon criteria for risk identified in this project are: how to collect sufficient quality-assured data sets to define the initial set of rules; and how to assess
the level of expertise of users training the system further.

Recent tree failures validate results of wind tipping curves

Tilt of > 0,2° at wind speed of 50-60 km/h leads to critical tilt values at gale winds

Last weeks storms confirmed results of tree assessments based on wind-tipping-curves and static pulling tests.

A new article analyses results of the first longitudinal study of sonic tomography and electrical resisitivity tomography repeated across several years.

Background

Tomography is widely used in tree risk assessment and forest ecology. Tomograms should be accurate, repeatable and comparable between consecutive measurements. This is the first longitudinal study addressing reproducibility over a period of several years and the key factors influencing it, from raw data to final tomograms.

Methods

Trees were either repeatedly measured by the same researcher over periods of hours to months, by different researchers using either the same or a new installation of the same equipment, or with different tomographs.

Results

Overall, differences between tomograms were small and without impact on the assessment of the safety of the tree. Between initial and follow-up measurements after 2 to 5 years, the coefficients of correlation of stress wave velocity ranged from 0.75 to 0.96, those of loss in section modulus estimated from tomograms ranged from 0.82 to 0.93. The coefficient of correlation of repeated sapwood area estimates with electrical resistivity tomography was 0.97. The major cause of deviations was variation in the sensor positions between repeated tomographies, and, for electrical resistivity tomography, variation of temperature.

Conclusion

Provided that sensor positions are accurately recorded and documented, tomograms can reliably be repeated by different assessors over periods of years. Assessments based on complex calculations like loss of section modulus should be treated with caution, because they accumulate and amplify all sources of variation.

In urbanized areas, wind disturbances can be intensified by anthropogenic stresses under which trees may become hazardous, creating serious threats and damages to nearby targets. Therefore, species with notably lower both wood mechanical properties and compartmentalization, such as pioneers, are considered to have higher wind damage risk if subjected to unfavorable growing conditions.

Eurasian aspen (Populus tremula L.) and silver birch (Betula pendula Roth.), are frequently found in both urban and peri-urban forests in Northeastern and Central parts of Europe, which strengthen the necessity for the evaluation of mechanical stability of such species. Therefore, static pulling tests were performed to compare the mechanical stability of the studied species in both urban and peri-urban forests.

The loading resistance of the studied species differed, with birch being more stable than aspen, indicating aspen to be more prone to wind damage. Additionally, the mechanical stability of birch did not differ between trees growing in urban and peri-urban forests, suggesting static pulling tests are a suitable method for comparing trees from completely different growing conditions.

Tomographs are increasingly used in advanced tree assessment. Their accuracy depends on accurately measured sensor positions (Rust 2017). For complex cross-sections, using the standard method based on electronic callipers, recording sensor positions is time consuming and, in rare cases, can even fail. Faster and easy to use methods could improve the quality of tomograms because users are more likely to record sensor positions accurately.

This study tested several alternative methods to measure sensor positions and compared them to results from electronic callipers. These are structure from motion, an infrared depth sensor, and pattern recognition. All methods proved to be highly accurate with results deviating less than 2% between methods.

The predisposition of Norway spruce to wind damage appears to be enhanced by pathogens such as Heterobasidion spp., which reduce stability of individual trees. However, detailed information about the effects of the root rot on the stability of individual trees across diverse soil types is still lacking. The aim of the study was to assess the effect of root rot on the individual tree stability of Norway spruce growing on drained peat and mineral soils. In total, 77 Norway spruce trees (age 50–80 years) growing in four stands were tested under static loading. The presence of Heterobasidion spp. had a significant negative effect on the bending moment at primary and secondary failure of the tested trees irrespectively of soil type. This suggests increased legacy effects (e.g., susceptibility to pathogens and pests due to fractured roots and altered water uptake) of storms. Damaged trees act as weak spots increasing the susceptibility of stands to wind damage, thus forming a negative feedback loop and contributing to an ongoing decline in vitality of Norway spruce stands following storms in the study region in the future. Accordingly, the results support the importance of timely identification of the decayed trees, lowering stand density and/or shortening rotation period as the measures to counteract the increasing effects of storms on Norway spruce stands.

Bark-stripping damage from the growing ungulate populations, in turn, are among the main biotic risks, which might burden the stability of trees and stands. Therefore, the aim of our study is to estimate the effect of cervid bark-stripping on the mechanical stability of Norway spruce using a static tree-pulling test. For the test, eight damaged and 11 undamaged canopy trees were selected from a 40-year old stand (plantation with 1 × 3 m spacing) growing on mineral mesotrophic soil. The selected trees were bark-stripped 7–9 years prior to the experiment. Uprooting was the most frequent type of failure; only two trees broke at the stem. For the damaged trees, the resistance to pulling was significantly reduced (p-value < 0.001). Stem volume and presence of bark-stripping were the best linear predictors of the basal bending moment at the primary failure (irreversible deformation of wood structure) and secondary failure (collapse of the tree). A significant (p-value < 0.001) interaction between stem–wood volume and presence of bark-stripping was observed for primary failure, indicating a size-dependent reduction of stability of the damaged trees. Such interaction lacked significance (p-value = 0.43) for the secondary failure (mostly uprooting), indicating a decrease in stability irrespectively of tree size. Somewhat surprisingly, the decrease in the overall mechanical stability of the bark-stripped trees appeared not to be related to a direct reduction of the strength of the stems, but rather to physiological effects such as altered allocation of carbon, increased drought stress because of interfered hydraulic conductance of wood, or secondary infestation. The reduced stability also suggests that bark-stripped trees can act as the weak spots decreasing the collective stability of stands in the long term, thus increasing the susceptibility to storms.

Beide Parameter korrelierten sehr gut.

So far, the risk of ultimate failure for partially uprooted trees and how they may recover their stability is not well understood. This study sets out to explore if and to what extent trees can regain anchoring strength after their root systems have been overloaded. In 2010, ten London Plane (Platanus × acerifolia) trees were subjected to destructive winching tests. Two trees were pulled to the ground while eight were loaded until primary anchorage failure occurred and were left standing with inclined stems.

In 2013, two trees had failed and six were re-tested nondestructively. By 2018, another tree had failed, and we tested the remaining five again. Rotational stiffness was derived for all trials and served as a nondestructive proxy for anchoring strength (R² = 0.91). After eight years, one tree had regained its original strength, while four had reached between 71 and 82% of their initial rotational stiffness. However, three trees failed during the observation period.

The results indicate that partially uprooted trees may re-establish stability over time, but some will not and may fail. In our small data set, it was not possible to identify visual criteria that could provide a reliable indication of tree stability recovery, but our data support the assumption that nondestructive pulling tests can be successfully employed to determine good vigorous candidates for retention after partial uprooting.

This study describes a simple method to estimate the correlation between root plate tilt and wind speed. The objective was to test if the tilt of trees in high winds can be predicted based on data obtained in the more often occurring low or mid wind events.

Our conclusions are:

There is a correlation of wind speed and root plate tilt.

The correlation can be described with an e-function or power-function.

This best-fit line can be understood as an individual tree’s
    specific tipping curve

Regional wind data can be used to calculate the wind-tilt relation.
However, the smaller the distance between tree and weather station
is, the better is the result.

These wind-tilt curves show the reaction of the tree to the regional
wind, including tunneling or sheltering effects of other trees or buildings.

The wind direction does affect the wind-tilt curve.

Deciduous trees: the variation between summer and winter wind-tilt
    curve is tree species dependent.

Tilt of > 0,2° at wind speed of 50-60 km/h leads to critical tilt
    values at gale winds.

Why do oak trees throw twigs away? Often people assume it’s a sign of drought stress or ageing. Some years ago, I studied this phenomenon in a research project.

Most twigs are shed in autumn, when photosynthesis has ceased and drought is not an issue any more.

Most shed twigs are one year old and leafless. Their shedding does not reduce transpiring leaf area.

Conclusions

Twig abscission (cladoptosis) is no immediate reaction to drought stress.

Most twigs are shed by vigourously growing trees, so it is not a sign of ageing either.

plate tilt and wind speed. The objective was to test if the tilt of trees in high winds can be predicted based on
data obtained in the more often occurring low or mid wind events.

Our conclusions are:

There is a correlation of wind speed and root plate tilt.

The correlation can be described with an e-function or power-function.

This best-fit line can be understood as an individual tree’s specific tipping curve

Regional wind data can be used to calculate the wind-tilt relation. However, the
smaller the distance between tree and weather station is, the better is the result.

These wind-tilt curves show the reaction of the tree to the regional
wind, including tunneling or sheltering effects of other trees or buildings.

The wind direction does affect the wind-tilt curve.

Deciduous trees: the variation between summer and winter wind-tilt curve is
tree species dependent.

Tilt of > 0,2° at wind speed of 50-60 km/h leads to critical tilt values at gale winds.
